Method for effective name development

The 5 Steps to Name Brands and Products

Professional naming demands more than creativity. A strong name must be distinctive, usable and built to last.

The Namestorm® Method combines broad creative exploration with systematic evaluation and checks. It provides a clear five-step process for developing strong company and product names.

Naming Step 1: Identify What Makes It Special

Naming starts with the project itself, not with name ideas. What makes it different? What should the name communicate? Who is it for, and what value does it offer?

A clear briefing helps us focus on the 3–5 most important characteristics. Creative questions then reveal the project’s personality, for example: If it were a person, animal or film, what would it be? What would its superpower be?

Naming Step 2: Expand the Vocabulary

Great names need plenty of creative raw material. We build a broad vocabulary around the key characteristics, exploring synonyms, associations and less obvious connections.

Creative techniques such as Wordwriting, Wonder Pictures and the Flip-Flop Method help us move beyond predictable ideas.

Naming Step 3: Turn Words into Names

Now the vocabulary becomes concrete name ideas. We deliberately explore different naming directions and name types, including:

  • Descriptive names that suggest the product or function

  • Acronyms and abbreviations

  • Evocative names based on metaphors and associations

The goal is not one obvious answer, but a broad and distinctive range of naming possibilities.

  • Invented names are newly created words, from subtle modifications to completely original constructions. They offer maximum creative freedom while keeping pronunciation, sound and clarity in mind.

  • Personal names use real or invented first names to give a brand personality, warmth and a more human feel.

Naming Step 4: Check Availability

A great name also needs to be usable. We conduct preliminary checks in relevant trademark classes and databases to identify potential conflicts early.

The checking process becomes more detailed as the shortlist narrows, helping us balance thoroughness and efficiency. These checks do not replace legal advice.

Naming Step 5: Make the Decision

Choosing the final name is often harder than expected. Opinions differ, and especially unusual names can trigger mixed reactions at first.

Our method provides clear criteria and decision tools to compare favourites objectively: descriptive or imaginative, original or serious, bold or understated?
